In my media studies class, on the 17th of September, my teacher taught us the history of the magazine. It is said that the word "magazine" comes from the french word "magasin" which has a meaning of "storehouse" and this is relevant because a magazine is where information is stored in order for other people in the world to read and find out about what interesting situations are happening.
Magazines are quite different to newspapers because they are thicker, smaller and are printed on glossy paper, in colour. They are published less frequently than newspapers but have a longer life. Magazines sit in dentists and doctors waiting rooms for months after they have been published as the articles are long lasting, whereas newspapers get thrown away after a day as the news is no longer current furthermore it is printed on paper which can get damaged and torn easily. 20 years ago there were no lifestyle magazines aimed at men, although, now there are more magazines that are made for them, for example:
Competing against other magazines is essential because the producers of the magazines all want their one to get picked from their demographic against another similar magazine. This is what makes the front cover so important, for example, big writing with lots happening on the page will get a magazine noticed compared to a simple one with not a lot on the front. Not only does a front cover have to look good it needs to be clear to the target audience as to what genre it is because if people get the wrong idea then that would mean the sales decrease.
